I removed a free float handguard and now want to reinstall it. Originally it came with a tube of Loctite to aid in attaching the handguard to the barrel nut. The manufacturer said to use Loctite 609 or equlivant. I've figured that I'm looking for either 609 or 640 or Permatex Green Sleeve Retainer. Does anyone know where I would get one of those products locally ( metro area)? I hate to order online & pay the shipping.

I doubt that you will find anything in the next 36 hrs or so, but when the regular supply type stores open back up, try the local auto parts store.

Autozone has it but I'd call ahead before driving too far, Grainger probably has it. Some autozones are open today http://www.autozone.com/landing/page.jsp?name=thanksgivingpromo

Just about any retailer that sells hardware or auto parts should have it.

I know Mid State Bolt carries a full line. Probably any bolt supplier in your area.

Just an FYI, if you use 640 or the Permatex green, you will have to heat it to get it off, to about 450 degrees. If you want permanent, those are the way to go. If you ever want to take it off again, go with the 609.

Thanks for that info. I don't want to have to hear it up for removal. It came off easy this time. I'll keep my search to 609.

I thought auto stores would be my best bet. I looked at Grainger's site & couldn't find it

609 so I thought it might be hard to find.

Never, never, never use anything but BLUE Loctite on a firearm unless it is something that you absolutely do not want to ever remove without heat. Blue Loctite is removeable with hand force. The reds, greens, and others usually require substantial application of heat to soften the product. I have drilled out many broken scope screws installed with red loctite and later broken off buy an unskilled "gunsmith". Your mileage may vary, others are welcome to their opinion. I have been working on precision mechanisms for over 40 years and speak from experience.

Mike, does blue Loctite benefit from heat also? I have used a pencil tip soldering iron to heat the head of a screw before and it seemed to help. Thanks.

Yes. Heat will soften all types of Loctite. I have used soldering pens, soldering guns, and mini-torches to directly heat the screw or transfer the heat via a screwdriver shank or magnetic screwdriver tip. The grief really comes to play when the heat will damage the finish or melt surrounding plastic or burn nearby wood. See the Loctite website for detailed info on all their products. They have a very good customer service staff.

Red Loctite is weak. I use Rocksett (a ceramic) to install silencer QD mounts. Not weakened by heat. It CAN be weakened by water, but essentially, you're never getting the QD mount back off.

Yes, heat will help get rig of blue Loctite, as well.

I'm familiar with various uses of Loctite in industrial applications. I generally agree that blue (242) is all that is needed for screws on guns. However, in this case it is for installing a handguard onto a barrel nut. The handguard "clamps" tight. So essentially it is installing a sleeve. The product manufacturer provides Loctite 609 for the original installation. That is where I came up with the product I'm looking for.

I checked several auto stores, both big box & mom / pop stores. They don't carry 609. I looked on Grainger's site & Amazon. I ended up ordering from Midway. It gave me a good excuse to order some other items in my wish list & round up to NRA.
